The canway mini wood stove uses technology similar to a solo stove to move air and provide a secondary burn that makes the small fire burn hot and closer to smoke free.
To light this stove, I used a large cup of wood pellets, poured on a little bit of lighter fluid and just touched it with a long reach lighter. The stove started instantly and after the lighter fluid burned off the flame died down for a bit and smoke built up inside the canister but it was being burned before escaping by the secondary burn holes in the upper rim of the stove.
Once things heated up the smoke in the canister disappeared and the flame got very large. I was able to boil 2 cups of water and then continue the boil for 7 minutes for a pasta meal by just adding wood pellets every couple minutes. The trick seems to be to add small amounts frequently instead of large scoops less often because it will smother the fire. The fuel I am using here is the Pitboss Classic hardwood mix of wood pellet grill pellets from walmart. It comes in a 40 pound bag for $15.
